HSU Che-jui 許哲睿

A mixed-media artist working with 4×5 large-format black-and-white film and AI-generated imagery, addressing examination, identity politics, idolatry and the truth of information.

HSU Che-jui in a Momotaro-inspired self-portrait: wearing a headband and a gold-brocade surcoat, holding a three-dumpling skewer, flanked by a pheasant, a Shiba dog and a macaque.

Works

Three ongoing projects

Interweaving film, performance and AI-generated imagery to address Taiwan’s examination system, identity politics and contemporary idolatry.

  1. When I Grow Up: a black-and-white 4×5 self-portrait at the centre — the bare-chested artist in glasses holds a tape measure in one hand to measure his own height (177.7 cm), while the other hand grips a roadside guardrail's stone post, its top trailing a length of broken wire — ringed by 177 AI-generated ID photos corresponding to the whole-number portion (deities, celebrities and anime characters from around the world), one of which is his real passport photograph with a corner cut off, representing the 0.7 cm remainder — set against dense, tangled tree branches.
